// Wonky Dynamo ‘Never Loved Before’ – Cunting Records – CR001 //

wonky-dynamoNo one ever knows what the next big thing is gonna be. . . but you can be rest assured it will be obvious as f**k and you wont believe you never thought of it! Needless to say then, C*nting records is simply a genius name for a quality new label.

Another cheeky nod from our friends over at Kahua Promotions informs us of the latest ‘potty mouth’ label they are working with and all sorts of goodies have subsequently landed on the door mat here at Sound Canvas towers.

cunting-records-logoLabel boss Lee Latmir introduces us to this Fledgling London based label and makes no bones about the name, “it’s all part of the label’s ethos”.  The debut offering from the label is from Wonky Dynamo (Lee Latmir & Tim Burns) the two
of which have collaborated for labels including Defected, Subliminal Soul, Nuphonic and
have clearly set the standard for what we should expect from this label in the future.

So what do we have? Read More »

This bank holiday weekend has some serious contenders but Eastern Electrics is our pick of the bunch. Tickets are still available, we picked ours up from PHONICA RECORDS in SOHO.

// Turning Point Festival – Roundhouse – Camden – 17th-19th 2010 //

Deviating slightly from the usual house, techno, soul and disco tittle tattle and trying to keep things fresher than a fruit and veg stall on Borough Market, Sound Canvas buoyantly brings to your attention the Turning Point Festival at Camden’s pioneering Roundhouse between the 17th -19th September 2010. The Roundhouse is at the forefront of London’s performing arts scene and as a charity, it helps over 3,000 fledgling artists every year. Turning Point Festival epitomises the Roundhouse’s aim to develop and uphold blossoming talent by assigning young people aged 25 and under to organise the event, thus equipping themselves with the skills required to take their careers forward.

Friday night in the main space kicks off with Professor Green, Toddla T, Redlight, Breakage, Jakwob, Dam Mantle, Redinho and Goodhand and super Glasgow promoters turned record label Numbers. Room 2 will be hosted by Club Snap, Crackle & Pop and the Cabaret Tent will be hosted by the quirky Marisa Carnesky. Saturday offers the biggest names on the urban scene with Radio 1 DJ, Bestival founder and Turning Point champion Rob da Bank, fellow Radio1 DJ MistaJam and grime collective Roll Deep backed by a full band.

Sunday winds down with an eclectic mix of music, poetry, comedy and interventions throughout the Roundhouse’s more intimate spaces. Sound Canvas favourites Eat Your Own Ears head up Room 2 with the best up-and-coming new music talent from London and beyond including Actress, Bo Ningen and Radiant Dragon. London Word Festival play host in the Marquee with Laura Dockrill, Ross Sutherland and Terry Saunders performing alongside the Roundhouse Poetry Collective and Roundhouse Experimental Choir.

Love Music Hate Racism will be hosting a programme of special guests in The Hub and Edinburgh Festival’s most progressive young theatre venue Forest Fringe present their Travelling Sounds Library. There will also be an outdoor market with DJ’s, a dress-up box hosted by Escapade and more.

// WAREHOUSE PROJECT 2010 //

They say the early bird catches the worm and we don’t want to wish away our lovely British summer. However, if you fancy getting over to the Manchester institution that is The Warehouse Project, you better do a quick head count and check www.thewarehouseproject.com  to pick your flavour. Line-ups have only just been released, and tickets for this anarchic rave held in a former air raid shelter underneath Piccadilly train station are selling out fast.

Manchester has had a real buzz around it for so long, that your excuses for not making it there must be running thin now. With Sankeys, churning out top nights so often it was voted best club in the world by DJ Magazine this year, you could even kill 2 birds with one stone!! WHP was previously voted as Britain’s best club by Mixmag and we found out for ourselves why last year. WHP absolutely captures the nature of dance music, with its atmospheric setting, body shaking speaker system and as popular as it has got, it’s still a dance hungry partisan crowd.

There have been 29 dates announced running from late September until new years day, and after studying the party calendar for a week, we still haven’t picked our top tip! Boys Noize Records party? 2 separate Cocoon nights, one headlined by Sven Vath and one by Ricardo Villalobos? Richie Hawtin playing at his Minus Label night along with Magda, SMD’s Delicatessen featuring Aeroplane and Tensnake are all up our street. WHP have even included artists such as Manchester’s own indie synthsters, Delphic, Legendary KRS -ONE and Grandmaster Flash, alongside names such as Four Tet, Moderat, Flying Lotus, Busy P, Magnetic Man and Wolf + Lamb’s Gadi .  What ever your flavour, WHP has something tasty for you.

// Red Bull Music Academy Announces Carnival Party – BOOM! //

Red Stripe sold over a garden fence, more jerk chicken than you can shake a vuvuzela at and over one million revelers aged from 1 to 100 descending upon West London. Yes, it’s that time again . . . Carnival 2010. This year the world’s second largest street festival has over 40 static sound systems on show, countless parading floats and a several pre and post carnival parties.

We’ve been keeping our mince pies peeled for this one for the last few weeks and ending months of speculation, Red Bull finally announced the line-up to go ahead on Monday 30th August. Headlining once again are Major Lazer, and typically of Red Bull they’ve announced a stonking mix of established and rising artists, including Douster, Porier, Sticky, Joker, London’s very own sound clash specialist David ‘RamJam’ Rodigan and Drop The Lime (Luca Venezia).

In Major Lazer, Red Bull have handpicked the one act that captures the colourful, vibrant, multi-cultural essence of the Carnival. Although the Party is expected to be held again under the Westway, don’t expect déjà vu. Diplo & Switch have a ton of new material since they played the Red Bull party last year and as usual will be showcasing a few unknown talents with an unexpected, surprise guest. Also getting us hot under the collar is New York based Drop the Lime. His almost unclassifiable sound seems a perfect fit for Red Bull and the carnival. Not intent with being the head honcho at label Trouble and Bass, his productions, remixes, and impending Fabric Live 53 mix have made Luca a man of the moment. His live sets are fast becoming legendary with Luca laying live vocals over what has been described as “goblin bass, chopped breaks and tropical beats” and reports of audience participation, sounds like a carnival to us!

Red Bull, you’ve done it again, you can count us in!!

Carnival runs August 29th-30thwww.thenottinghillcarnival.com

// We love . . . Disco Bloodbath //

We listen to alot of mixes here at Sound Canvas and it can be quite rare for some of them to keep being replayed over several weeks. The Disco Bloodbath mix we downloaded from the We Love website has been cheering us up every morning for ages now, the only thing is we can’t source the bloody track-list.

Disco Bloodbath are Damon Martin, Dan Beaumont and Ben Pistor and they champion a fantastic medley of spaced out raw italo disco, vintage house and proto-techno which is right up our street. They started out as a basement boogie outfit in East London and are rightly now helping people cut the rug across dance floors around the globe.

We higly recommend you keep your precious little ears to the ground for Disco Bloodbath mix tapes, remixes and original productions in the near future.

// We love . . . Tim Green //

For several months now this London based house and techno producer has been a regular feature on our mixes here at Sound Canvas Music. Tracks like his remix of Claude Von Strokes “Vocal Chords”, “Kitch In” and “Revox” also on Dirtybird and my current fave “Old Sunshine” on Get Physical have had us bouncing all over the gaff. Clearly not content with knocking out filler tunes, this man is hotter than a billy goat in a pepper patch right now!

Tim’s musical journey began playing the guitar and having a keen interest in bands but this soon changed after falling in love electronic music. After spending the majority of his clubbing experiences smashing it up in London’s Fabric, he found the inspiration and drive needed to seriously take his production skills to another level altogether. These boundary pushing skills have seen his work appear on dynamic labels such as Cocoon, Cr2 and the above mentioned Dirtybird and Get Physical.

// Thomas Schumacher – “Bandera” out 9th August //

Thomas Schumacher - "Bandera" snatch recordsJust received a cheeky advance of This. . .  we can tell you from the the horses mouth, its rather groovy indeed. . .

After getting our groove on to Snatch! 004 from Kolombo vs Loulou  Playerz, Riva Starr’s blisteringly hot label presents us with another debut release… This time, from the ever-on-form Thomas Schumacher

bander-thomas-schumacherAlways keen to create and explore new avenues of sound, Berlin’s Thomas Schumacher has, over recent months, consistently surprised and impressed us with his productions. Whether its producing DJ T’s album ‘The Inner Jukebox’; providing contrasting, yet equally brilliant remixes for the likes of Axel Bartsch and Trentemoller, or dropping beats that range from the deepest tech to the wonkiest of basslines on his very own ‘Slow’ and ‘Taxi’. Thomas always proves to have his finger well and truly on the pulse of modern electronic music.

Encompassing the Snatch! ethos to perfection, Thomas’s debut ‘Bandera’ delivers a large dose of summer party fun, wrapped in the finest of twisted beats, bass and efx. Mojito’s at the ready, as Thomas unleashes a stunning Cuban carnival, powered by the strongest of kick drums and trippy little touches. Read More »

// Exit 2010 . . . talk to me //

As we approached the Petrovaradin fortress in the rally-like taxi on the opening night of the festival, our eyes widened and cheeky grins began to appear as we saw the Exit banners and laser beam style lights shoot across the sky. We jump out at the base of the bridge which leads to the road that takes you towards the main festival entrance. I’ll be first to admit that I was a little apprehensive with regards to how four English geezer’s were going to be welcomed by the local people of Novi Sad, who were pumping music from stereo’s, selling merchandise and alcoholic shots along the street. We walk through the other side of the tunnel where we bank left to exchange our e-tickets for wristbands and stroll towards the turnstiles where security and old bill with shooters on their hip mooch about making sure you don’t take your drinks to the entrance. Once inside we all agree on a rendezvous point and bop to the bar where we exchange our Serbian dinar for beer and energy drink tokens. With a pint of Tuborg turbo shandy each we check the line-up schedule and head towards the dance arena to check Crookers, Erol Alkan and Boys Noize back to back.

Nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to see, hear and feel when we looked over the edge of the peak on our way to the metal staircase that took us down to the dance arena. We get a few more rounds in as Crookers tear the crowd up with trademark pulsating beats and edgy remixes, all of us floating on the energy and atmosphere that eventually takes us to the pit in front of the stage. As we look around we can’t believe how big and well laid out the dance arena is, how loud and crisp the sound system is and how much the crowd are captivated, you couldn’t design a better venue from scratch in my opinion. We scale the incline towards the bottle neck passage that opens out to the football stadium style curved terracing where people are throwing some serious moves in unison. Here I probably witnessed the best set of my life where Erol Alkan categorically smashed the place into tatters with a seamless house, techno and electro mix where the entire arena was hanging on his every flick, loop, cut, scratch and knob twist. The Londoner had us all in the palm of his hand and if stopped the CDJ mid-set and announced on the mic that we were all going to invade one of the bordering countries we would have. At the end of his set Mr Alkan hopped up onto the desk to take a well deserved bow as the crowd were going nuts, before handing over to Boys Noize with their collaboration “Lemonade” setting the tone for the remainder of the morning.

// Moonbeam release “Distance EP”on Traum //

moon-beam-photoJust received a tasty little EP here, taking the form of Moonbeam’s latest mystical offering, Distance EP out July 2010 on Germany’s Traum  Schallplatten.

Nod nod nod nod. . . . This is some seriously matured late night Atmospheric deep techno right here,  with some cutting edge glitchy percussion and amazingly enticing melodies. . . talk to me!

Russia’s Moonbeam have been gaining momentum over the last few years and with good reason. Formed in Nizhny Novgorod in 2003, brothers Pavel and Vitaliy have been steadily releasing dance floor tracks that weave seamlessly from thick-bellied atmospheric techno to dense charging trance. Storming into DJ Magazine’s Top100 Poll, the two continue to widen their sonic arc with a fabric of different styles, diverse guest vocalists both in their studio and with their live shows and now present their latest release on Germany’s Traum.moonbeam-distance-ep
The sound of the New Wave band Bauhaus seems to make it’s way into several releases nowadays…
We are not talking about samples but the dark romantic feeling of this period. Moonbeam’s track “Distance” carries this haunted and ghostly feeling of the 80’s, the chill of cold steel and candle lit rooms. It wouldn’t be a Moonbeam track without the spine-tingling melodies which have always been the strength of their music.  Read More »

// Lost My Dog Records – Competition Time //

Bright eyed, bushy tailed and fresh back from their recent antics at the Sonar Music Festival in Barcelona,  its all about Lost My Dog right now. . .

Five short years have sped by as these fellows have searched high and low for their K9, releasing no fewer then 35 highly respectable deep house offerings along the way, earning themselves and the label a well deserved seat at the table of underground music labels.

The label has seen the likes of Jay Tripwire , Jake Childs, Harold Heath and Nathan Coles, not to mention in-house producer Pete Dafeet  furnishing us with some high quality deep house / tech house grooves over the last 5 years

100 reasons why dance music still rules(IDJ magazine)

So what have we got. . .  (rubs hand together) Lost My Dog have kindly sent us a cheeky copy of Lost My Dog: 5 Years & Still Looking, which is in our deep opinion, a quality compilation of 14 of the best tracks from the label served up to us over the last 5 years as selected and mixed by in-house producer and DJ Pete Dafeet.

With Pete Dafeet – Lungs (Fred Everything Remix), Jay Tripwire – Everytime, Kelvin K – Gershon Got It Poppin’ among others, the mix is just as you would expect, a smooth faultless blend of flowing grooves which undulates nicely through this 50 minute journey of sorts. . . . to be honest if you know the label you’ll be familiar with the calibre of Pete’s selection here. . . question is. . . can you do better??

// Warung Brazil opening party @ Privilege, Ibiza //

On Wednesday 30th June 2010 at the worlds largest club Privilege in Ibiza, there is a very special opening party happening called Warung Brazil, Warung meaning . The party originates and has been imported from the Warung Beach Club on the fine sands of Praia Brava which has a breathtaking backdrop panorama of the Atlantic Ocean. Globally acknowledged as South Brazil’s Mecca for underground electronic skulduggery and proclaimed to be one of the best clubs in the world by the likes of Sven Vath, Luciano and Loco Dice, who’s going to argue with that? I’m certainly keen to learn more about this fascinating South American house and techno movement. Upon arriving into the rich Adobe Flash soaked website, the steady kick drum, punchy hats and skippy percussion of Hernan Cattaneo’s Pastida remix which kicks in on the sites media player has me nodding immediately. . . I’m provisionally hooked.

As I scan across the page I realise I seriously need to brush up on my Portuguese as I can’t understand a bloody word . . . never mind I find the photo section which is teeming with very attractive humans and an obvious hedonistic party atmosphere, as I pick my jaw back up off the floor I am starting to accept that the Warung ethos may well be a winner.

Warung’s reputation for showcasing top notch DJ’s and blooding upcoming talent will be upheld this season at Privilege with the main room hosting Felix Da Housecat, Sharam, Gui Borratto, Robert Babicz, 16B Lolitas and special live appearances by Dirty Vegas, Kevin Saunderson’s Inner City and Life is a Loop.

The alternative Coco Loco adds a different dimension to the main room, with DJ’s Alex Niggemann, Coyu, Solomun, Gorge, Superlounge, Gavin Herlihy, Sebo-K, Alex Kenji, Simon Baker, Geddes, Uner, Ricky Ryan, Kasper, Robbie Romero, Matt Tolfrey and Will Saul. European labels Get Physical, 8 Bit, Mobilee, Supernature, Soulfooled, Murmurr, Leftroom, Hope & Audio Therapy and Baracca are hosting this room for the summer and this is where you’ll probably find me in a dimly lit corner communicating via the medium of dance. I think it’s fair to say that this has the potential to be the party of the season . . . what do you reckon?

All in all a marvelous spread, see you in Privilge on a Wednesday very soon.

// Robyn featuring Röyksopp remix contest //

For their next remix competition, The Mighty Beatport’s next contest comes in the form of , Robyn’s ‘None Of Dem’, her collaboration with Röyksopp from her ‘Body Talk Pt 1’ album.

“The track which became ‘None Of Dem’ started as a beat which I already had, and loved, so it was obvious it would develop into something more,” says Robyn. “It is a really important track on ‘Body Talk Pt 1.’ Lots of people are really into it, we thought it would be interesting to see how others would reinterpret it by giving them the opportunity to remix the track!”
Get on it . . . we are.

// We love . . . Sam Shepherd AKA Floating Points //

The first instance we heard of this young mans talent was on Tensnake’s Resident Advisor mix last year. The track featured was “Vacuum Boogie” and it shuffled along beautifully in a spacey acid jazz style groove which reminded me of Glenn Underground’s work in the mid to late 90’s.

Since then we dug a little deeper into his works and quickly become big fans of his ability to float to and from multiple genres whilst turning heads and pricking up a number of well educated ears. His competence and ability seemingly beyond his years can be vindicated by his time studying classical composition and jazz piano in Manchester at Cheltham’s School of Music.

Still in his early twenties, Shepherd has had tracks and remixes released on labels like R2, Planet Mu, Ninja Tune, Domino, Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood and his very own label Eglo which he runs with Rinse Fm’s Alexander Nut. Another astonishing achievement occurred in May 2009 when Shepherd and fellow collaborator Fatima conducted a 13 piece Floating Points ensemble at Camdens Roundhouse to great success.

Stand out tracks for us are:
- Love Me Like This (nonsense dub) on R2 Records, a synth drenched bump along with riding piano.
- The flip side “Shangrila” with its panning keys, effects and future break beat/electronica.
- K & G Beat on Plant Mu and Peroration V on Brownswood , proper broken beat atmospherics with the latter a collaboration with Fatima.
- Our particular fave “Shark Chase” recently released on Eglo, a jazzy techno trip full of cheeky little surprises.

I would strongly suggest you have a peek at this geezer’s busy schedule and check him out live if your lucky enough to have him in your manor in the near future >>> myspace.com/floatingpoints

// We are all over. . . Soulclap //

Hear at Soundcanvas we are always online having a butchers for quality alternative music blogs and websites and recently we stumbled across a splendid site called Soulclap.The site caught me off guard at first and took a minute for the penny to drop that it is run by Cnyce & Elyte, the steadfast mid tempo house and deep disco duo Soulclap based in Boston in the United States Of America.

These two finely attired gentlemen have a number of releases and re-edits on Airdrop and the inspired NY based Wolf + Lamb label and hotly anticipated rubs on Aux-Rec in the pipeline but their talents don’t halt there.When you navigate the superbly designed site you realise that these boys are serious players in the underground music trade and have got their highly skilled fingers in all sorts of flavoursome pies.

As well as Djing, promoting and producing for top notch labels Cnyce & Elyte offer boutique DJ services, custom musical environments and consultation for hospitality, fashion and media brands. My favourite area of their site is the blog as it houses podcasts from various alternative artists and Dj’s and the latest offering available for download is a wicked mix by the extremely hot Moustache Mamas, which I have been busting in my motor over the last week or so.

So if you looking for high end music entertainment in all areas and formats check these boys out now!

// Mild Pitch 006 / Ribn – The light Black EP //

mild-pitch-montage

mild-pitch-montage

Man,what is it with Germany and Deep House? . . to my knowledge, never has a nation been so unrivaled in consistently delivering such grass roots deep house and minimal techno with such ease and Mild Pitch Records is certainly no exception.mild-pitch-records-logo

Based out of Essen, Germany, Mild Pitch Records is the Brain child of renowned producers Manuel Tur, Dplay and Langenberg, each of which have had great individual success and gained deserved respect within the industry, working with an array of acclaimed labels, Freerange, Drumpoet Community, Ovum, Mule Electronic to name but a few.

Mild Pitch Records had its first release in September 2009 with Ribn’s ‘This Feeling’ and has since brought us 5 benchmark releases adhering to what proves to be a well defined formula paving the way for release number 6, ‘The light Black EP’ out 26th May.

mild-pitch-light-black-cover

mild-pitch-light-black-cover

Mild Pitch 006 / Ribn – The light Black EP
This latest release sees Manuel Tur & Langenberg teaming up once again, to produce under the ever more familiar guise of ‘Ribn‘. Along with managing to find out just what kind of a super hero Manual Tur aspires to be, Soundcanvas has managed to wrangle a cheeky review advance on This latest offering and our findings are as follows . . .

A/ Light Black
This is a seriously atmospheric, progressive groove of a track, with a nice techno percussion twinge. With its bulbous Basssline grinding away throughout, the track fills the space between your ears with some lovely panning, reverb etc, in short the production here is slick. Though the overall vibe of Light black is pretty soft and palatable on your senses, you can rest assured that hearing this dropped into a set in a club should be a sure confirmation you are you will not be leaving til you’ve had a quiet word with yourself in the corner around 6am. . .

B1/ Sin & Figs
Having passed the tracks between us here at Soundcanvas, our over all the favorite from this installment is the ‘Sin & Figs’ track which our very own Hennessy summed up beautifully. . . “A bit of me that, I’m all over it like a smoked bacon and fried egg sandwich with white crusty uncut bread and a mug of rosie with one sugar. This track lulls me into a real relaxed zone and I could happily listen to it all day, day dreaming. The deep beat, coupled with the earthy and techy percussion, rolls along beautifully and the various chord, key and sound arrangements have me sold. This tune is definitely going to make it onto my next mix.” the ever graciously descriptive Hennesy there . . and I quite agree with him, light skippy high-hats and an almost acoustic guitar sounding riff let this 8 minute ride vibe you out to the max.

B2/ Stonedrum
Crackle crackle of the vinyl . . . introduces this great retro tinged down tempo number which has me got me seriously nodding in my chair right now. This track would sit perfectly in the middle of a ‘Disco/Down Tempo’ set or well. . . as a ‘closer’ at the end of any respectable set actually, but again, this is, at its core a brilliantly produced chugging deep house bump. You know what . . . I think this could be my favorite actually . . .

Check it out for your selves here . . .

// Manuel Tur – Exclusive Interview with SCM //

How lucky are you! ?! Manuel Tur takes time out to talk to soundcanvas about music, Coffee, Construction sites and prized vinyl. . .

1)In your opinion, what has been the best party/promotion in the last year?
That must have been our Mild Pitch label showcases at Robert Johnson and Panoramabar with Ribn live, Dplay, Langenberg and myself. Also, we’ve just returned from a great night at our favourite swiss club, Zukunft in Zurich last week again.

2)If we could take care of all your commitments this weekend and gave you unlimited funds, where would you go and what would you get up to?
I’d buy loads of expensive studio gear, get into the studio and finish my new album for Freerange at last!

3) Soundcanvas recently spent some time in Berlin and had some amazing clubbing experiences, from the cutting edge precision of the Watergate sound system and decor, to the sweaty, crazy little ripped out basement party, Hotboxx at Kleine Reise. . . What is it about Germany that seems to breed the deep routed essence required for this genre of music . .  whats your secret!?
I think Germany is a very diverse and polycentric country so you can’t really compare Berlin to other cities such as Essen where I’m based. Especially Berlin is a very international city so there’s probably not even a specificly “German” secret behind all this.

4)What can we expect from Mild Pitch over the next 12 months?
We’ve got a brand new EP coming out now, entitled “Light Black” by Ribn which is the project I do with Langenberg, followed by a single from Blakkat who I already worked with on my last album. Blakkat used to run Shaboom records out of Blackpool, UK in the late 90s and was one of my key influences when I started to get into house, so I’m really happy we could get him for a Mild PItch single.

5)If you had a magic TV remote control, who would you put on mute?
The construction site in front of my house that makes it really difficult to concentrate on answering these questions right now.

6)Mac or PC?
Mac and PC

7)If you could choose a superpower what would it be?
Make coffee taste good even if there’s no more milk in the fridge…

8)Which producer/s should we be keeping an ear out for in the near future?
Lots of young talent out there right now.. Tim Toh and Space Dimension Controller are only two to name.

9)For all the budding producers out there looking for a tip. . . what would you deem to be a ‘must have’ piece of studio equipment?
There really is no “must have” piece of studio gear, the most important production tool still has to be your brain and your own creativity! Power sockets are very useful to start at some point though.

10)Fire alarms are ringing. . . you have time to retrieve 3 pieces of prized vinyl, what would they be?
Roisin Murphy – Ruby Blue
Kerri Chandler – Back To The Raw
Björk – Volta

Two Dots is a tune. There I said it, and I don’t mind admitting, it took me a while to source it too! I just love it when you have to to dig hard to find a track, once found, consumption is all the more satisfying. This one rewarded me with the realization its another painfully well produced Pezzner remix. dave pezzner deep house music producerDave Pezzner. . . based out of Seattle Washington came onto our radars around 2008 and began defining what has now become a unique, deep, percussive, educated sound which gives not only your body, but your mind something to think about and ‘Two Dots’ is a prime example of this. With a few high end productions under his belt, he was soon picked up by the highly acclaimed ‘benchmark’ deep house label, Freerange records and has gone on to produce and remix for and with the likes of Mike Monday, Milton Jackson, Chris Lattner, James Braun to name but a few .
As for the rest of the mix, its another fine mess of glitchy satisfying deep house and minimal techno to get your teeth stuck into. . . nom nom nom

// SoulBounce.com >>> Alternative / Underground Soul Bizness //

As we are still very much a fledgling blog (launched February 2010) and to date we have leaned heavily towards the electronic genre and have not really got around to expressing our feelings for the more soulful side of our musical tastes. Not so long ago we were really hooked on artists like Dwele, Jill Scott, India Arie, Jazzy Jeff, Me One, Eric Roberson, Vikter Duplaix, Floetry, Musiq Soulchild and Bilal. We were exposed to these sounds mainly by Gilles Peterson on his legendary Worldwide show on Radio 1. The other day we were digging through some old mix CDs and it struck me how we have lost touch in this area of music which we truly love. So I thought I would hit the web to see if I could find somewhere to bring me up to speed and I came across a wonderful site called Soul Bounce. The layout and design is very pleasing to the eye and the Soul Bounce team are  hot with on the pulse reviews, audio downloads and interviews embracing both popular and alternative/underground urban artists.  On top of all that they have a comprehensive blog roll which is perfect for stumbling upon other music related gems, which is always a nice touch I’m sure you’ll agree.

// We Love . . . the Red Box @ Space //

This year is chugging along so quickly you might actually be forgiven for not having booked your Ibiza trip yet. Here at Soundcanvas we are thankfully all booked up and looking forward to our annual tear up. One of our favourite parties on the white isle is We Love… @ Space and if I’ve got my maths right, 2010 will be the 21st year this legendary Playa D’en Bossa party has been running. Originally starting off as an after party affair back in the day for workers, lost souls and non-stop ravers, this movement has gone from strength to stength and is now considered one of the most respected avenues for cutting edge underground artists and dj’s in the world. Last year the only party in Ibiza you could catch Claude Von Stroke and Carl Craig was at We Love. . .

This year We Love are teaming up once again with the G-Shock Burlington Project to lauch We Love . . . Fresh Blood 2010. The aim of this new project is to break up and coming artists, indie labels and underground parties, which are looking to reach a larger audience and expand their fan base. The finalists will host the infamous Red Box room in Space and those who smash it will continue their journey with We Love, Burlington Project and G-Shock on their European events. Check the links above to get involved. . . tidy.

So if you’ve not sorted your summer hols yet, get those flights booked, purchase those sunglasses you’ve got your mince pies on and we’ll see you in the Red box.

// We have a sneaky crush on . . WEPLAYMUSIC //

weplay - dj's and music producersThe reason WEPLAYMUSIC has been our favourite blog over the last year or so is because of it’s consistent focus of proper underground music, it’s easy to navigate site and unbeatable and exclusive mix downloads. Every time we visit the site we learn something new about the music we hold dear to our hearts. . deep/tech house, minimal/techno, disco and alternative electronic oddities.

WEPLAYMUSIC are Simon Ledder and Mattie Twentythree and they follow the simple ethos of playing the very best of all of the above at various social soiree’s in London and up North. These guys are not impressed by big name DJ’s, the latest trends or champagne soaked two-bob celeb riddled clubs, they are simply aroused by people getting together, getting down and cutting the rug like nobodies watching. . . and that’s why we love them!
Our favourite area of their blog is their mix series which is split into four sections:

- WPM ltd – Their flagship series of cutting edge exclusive mixes from the likes of Jay Shepheard and Rainer Weichhold commissioned for WEPLAYMUSIC.

- WPM presents… – A series for one off label/artist showcases and live sets.

- WPM – Simon and Mattie’s very own mix series.

- LDN/MAN/UK – Mixes from various musically like minded humans from around the country.

Check WEPLAYMUSIC in the cellar for Triangle @ Hobby Horse, 281 Kingsland Road, Hackney, London on 30th April. They are collaborating with Dalston faces MAKE ME and THIS IS NOT HAPPENING for a bi-monthly shakedown in the new basement boogie space. It’s free to get in and is open from 9pm til 3am. Lovely job.

// We love . . . Tensnake //

Over the last six months I have been keeping a keen and beady eye on a gentleman called Marco Niemerski, also known as Tensnake.

This particular producer from Hamburg Germany caught my ear last year on a Permanent Vacation mix tape with his remix of Polargeist’s “Home From The Can” on Bang Gang 12 inches.

The rich vintage beat, warm flowing chords, clever imaginative programming and song structure had me instantly hooked and I found myself blasting it full volume and throwing shapes in my motor whilst fellow commuters gazed on in confusion. It reminds me of the early nineties MK, MAW and Chez Damier B-side remixes that I grew up with and I found myself digging through my old records in the loft, hooking up both my 1210’s for a cheeky dabble of vinyl skulduggery.

Tensnake has been quietly establishing himself since around 2006 with releases on his own label Mirau and remixes and productions on Radius, Endless Flight, Domino, Running Back and Permanent Vacation. Stand out tracks for me are his remix for Sally Shapiro’s “I’ll Be By Your Side” his very own “In The End (I Want You To Cry)”  Holding Back (My Love) the above mentioned remix on Bang Gang and of course I have well and truly jumped on the band wagon for “Coma Cat”

For me though, best of all is his choice of profile pic’s in particular the image chosen for his Discogs page . . . sitting in the back garden avin’ a bit of grub, lovely job.

If for some reason or another you have not yet been graced by this gentleman’s musical talent then check him out on the following links:

As I write this I am kickin’ back to his dj mix for Fairtilizer.com from last summer on SoundCloud . . . tidy >>> www.soundcloud.com/tensnake

// Serious Grooves – Mixtape 1- Back In The Day //

mixtape-1 classic house music mix imageKicking of with Ron Trent’s classic master piece ‘The Foot Therapy EP’ this mix has us digging through our back catalogue of vinyl, dusting off some extreme rarities from the world of classic underground house music. The mix features some true classics from pioneering underground artists Ron Trent, Chez Damier, Ralph Falcon, Victor Simonelli, Kerri Chandler and Marc Kinchen. As all you heads out there will know these are the people that truly nurtured and defined this budding scene through the early 90’s, providing the benchmark for future deep and soulful house.

As mere fledgling underground music enthusiasts, we would spend our Saturday afternoons elbowing our way through the crowds in Blackmarket Records Soho trying to fight off the older boys to get our hands on copies mk-burning red imageof what are now deemed pinnacle underground tracks. Acquiring the much acclaimed and savagely rare MK Burning dub mixes on Area 10 Records red vinyl was one of the most memorable records shopping experiences to date. As I sit here I reminisce how it went down a storm when I played it that very night at a local party of pissed up rookie house music fans. ;-)

A track list has been provided for all trainspotter types (like us!) to satisfy your soul with cry’s of “OMG! I have been wanting to know what this track was for like. . . 15 years!”

// White Noise Club – Electro, Indie, Aternative //

White Noise at White Trash berlin ImageJust found this flyer in the back pocket of a pair of my jeans and memories flood back to yet another fab night we attended in Berlin last month.

Held over two floors at the White Trash fast food venue Berlin, the night is called White Noise and it’s musical direction takes an unpredictable winding road every Saturday night delivering a dance floor shaking Indie, Electro and Alternative music medley.

The venue is wicked. Upstairs is a very open pub style affair with large central bar where you could almost be fooled into a false sense of redneck mayhem, as folk can been seen table top dancing and thrashing around to the likes of Nirvana, Libertines, Ramones and The Rolling Stones.

However, take your Toosh down the tight winding staircase into the basement and a very different story unfolds. With low ceilings and the decor making you feel like your about to be the next victim of a vampire attack. The sound system is banging and the dance floor packed and jumping to a loud roller coaster of alternative indie electro music, from the likes of Crystal Castles, MGMT, Justice, The Foal’s, Ladyhawke, CSS and Depeche Mode. This is a seriously raw underground alternative music club, where buying a beer makes you feel like you are pawning your grandmothers wedding ring as you bark your order to the caged barman.

White Noise and its venue stink of the typically unpredictable wicked underground music scene which rumbles defiantly on in Germany’s hive of musical culture. . . Once again, hats of to you Berlin.

Something else deep and soulful?
Ok, so when we soundcanvas fellows are out carving up dance floors , it must be said, we do usually like to drop and hear some tough cutting edge beats that get bodies moving. However, the diversity of the electronic music world is blessed with a multitude of extremely talented producers/artists, able to effortlessly fuse electronic music with, well, ‘Soul’ basically, melting your heart with ease, by means of beautiful Rhodes chords, bass guitars, smooth vocals . . .

Unwilling to flush out of our veins a deep rooted love for high quality soulful house music, this mix swings smoothly back and forth between the deep and soulful sides of this vast genre featuring tracks from: Osunlade, Karizma, Manoo & Francois A, Tortured Soul and many more.

//Sven Vath Live @ Ten Years Aniversary Cocoon Amnesia Ibiza 27-07-2009

Ten+Years+Cocoon+Ibiza+cocoonI am sitting at home listening to the Cocoon 10th anniversary mix with my headphone volume cranked right up, nodding away reminiscing. 20 minutes in and I’m thinking I need to get this mix onto our blog. . .

Offering a glimpse into the deep dark world of Cocoon Ibiza, this mix is from between 11pm and 3am in the main room of Amnesia, with Sven Väth and Joris Voorn. commanding the dance floor. The Soundcanvasmusic crew were lucky enough to be in Ibiza to celebrate this monstrous occasion last August and can tell you first hand it was probably the best night on the island. Sven Vath and friends categorically smashed it and took their faithful crowd on a winding rollercoaster of intricate ups, downs, twists, turns and disco bombs.

Ammnesia Ibiza is arguably one of the best clubs in the world and they broadcast their nights live across the airwaves on Ibiza Sonica throughout the summer. This mix comes courtesy of this service.

So as I sit here rocking back and forth, I raise a glass of the finest Red to the 11th year of Cocoon and say roll on the summer. amnesia cocoonYou cant get us out there quick enough for another fine banquet of top high end house and techno . . . hmm . . . I’ll have mine medium rare please.

Enjoy the mix and see you out there.

// Supperclub London Review //

supperclub London Image

Adding to what is fast becoming an international empire, Supperclub London has landed in what was formally known as Neighbourhood. So, whats it like? Well as expected, the uber cool white minimal lounge feel and Bed dining of la Salle Neige is as expected. Le Bar Rouge was however very small, dark and in our opinion, not as good as it should be.

Primarily Supperclub for us has always been about high end music and atmospherics and DJ’s Jurr and Rolove have always successfully pioneered the musical side of the brand by consistently mixing and compiling some of the best deep house and down tempo cd’s to date, so expectations were high on this front.
The music throughout the first half of the evening (la Salles Neige) was a pretty much on form mix of smooth chillout including a beautifully worked remix of Marvin Gaye/Shirley Bassey, through to some nice mid-tempo house and disco from the likes of The Rurals and Metro area which was reassuring to hear.

Alex Rose at Supperclub London

The food was four set courses of absolutely fantastic tucker from broccoli and stilton soup to sea bream with curried coulis. . . haaandsome. Several £11 cocktails and £78 bottles of Verve Champagne later and we find ourselves dancing to what can only be described as a sterile blend of borderline commercial through to obvious ‘techy’ house which didn’t seem to want to settle and did not really reflect on what you would typically hear on a Bar Rouge CD. This said, from around 1am things did seem to toughen up some what and it all became a little more consistent, with music being dropped from the likes of Jimpster, Inland Knights and Chris Lake.

We are not convinced the UK arm has entirely captured the sheer quality, depth and caliber of the music featured on their CD’s and also sense more effort and emphasis has been placed on wowing you with high prices and random acts, such as a masked semi clad Phantom of the Opera lady pouring wax all over herself and then proceeding to ‘jack up’ in front of you. . . hmmmm.

// Hotboxx – Kleine Reise – Berlin //

Soundcanvasmusic were lucky enough to spend the weekend in Berlin to check out the renowned party culture. Friday night started at new boogie basement venue Kleine Reise, located deep in the district of Kreuzberg. The entertainment for the evening was the natty new party Hotboxx and the soundtrack was ass-bouncin, psych-rockin, dirty-disco. After ordering a couple of extremely moreish mojito’s and sinking a couple of well earned rank tasting shots we strut from the bar through to the dance floor passing man of the moment Tensnake on the way. The venue is proper, at first it looks like a cross between the film sets of Saw, Hostel or Trainspotting, until you spot the subtle decorational touches and classic furniture that looks like it’s been chored from my nans kitchen. As the alcohol begins to take affect and I feel myself greasing up and feelin’ loose I shimmy my tush onto the dance floor, where a seamless blend of mid-tempo goodness is played out by headline act Ilija Rudman, Namedrop and Benoit, Ray Burst and the seriously foxy Moustache Mama’s. Not sure what time we got out of there in the morning but we certainly recommend checking this shit out. Upcoming Hotboxx parties are at The City Arts & Music Project, London March 12th and again at Kleine Reise, Berlin March 19th. // Freerange records //

Freerange records has been a big favourite of ours since the very start of it’s existence over 10 years ago. They have consistently put out innovative, deep and soulful grooves across a number of genres, making them in my opinion one of the top UK based labels. Jamie Odell (Jimpster/Audiomontage) and Tom Roberts originally launched the label to release Jamie’s own releases but soon started to build on those foundations by signing and developing fledgling artists, which has now led to a stable boasting over fourteen regular artists. The number of 12 inch releases currently stands at eighty plus and full length albums at sixteen plus. Keep up the outstanding work fellas.

Our mission statement reads: “One calling for the Social Club is the inclusion of styles, genres, and thus the public.” This isn’t some wishful thinking either – the weight of history is all around the Social Club. Situated in the very heart of Paris, the Social Club used to house the same printers which saw George Clemenceau’s L’Aurore newspaper come rolling off, in particular with Emile Zola’s famous ‘J’accuse’ letter to the French president.
