After tearing it up all over the globe bringing musical joy and acquiring loyal support along the way, the smoking hot Heidi Van Den Amstel is set to release her first compilation ‘The Jackathon’ and because we have generally missed her infectious laugh from our wireless, we thought it was about time Sound Canvas got the full lowdown…We caught up with Heidi ahead of her mammoth 8 hour warehouse set, ‘A night with’ this Saturday in East London. As she prepares to smack up your pelvic region, loosen them hips and talk to you in hebrew…
Hey, …just got back yesterday….hope i’m coherent enough for you. Ha!
Looks you’ve been a busy lady! We know your just back from South America, how was it?
It was amazing….i was in Mexico/North & Central America. All the gigs were fantastic. So much love and great energy……and great food.
So your night ‘The Jackathon’ hasn’t even been going for a year yet & you already have residences in London, Berlin, Paris, Miami, Manchester & Amsterdam! You must be happy with how its all going, anywhere else you’d like to take the Jack? Actually i started my night in October 2009. So it has been going on a while now. People have just been catching on to it. I’m really happy about all the love its been getting. I will take this party anywhere one wants me…..
We’re super excited about your ‘Heidi presents The Jackathon’ compilation your releasing next month. Some awesome artists on there. 18 original tracks! What can you tell us?
It sort of came about by accident. I was just thinking that the nights I was doing were going great and why not follow it up with something for the fans and the people who have been supporting the parties. So I asked a bunch of artists if they fancied making me an exclusive track for the comp and they all said yes to my surprise! The only one who’s track isnt exclusive is Steve Bug’s but he let me have “jack is back” for the comp because it was perfect for the idea. It did take quite a while to get everything together as the majority of the artists on there are super busy, but in the end the result was more than I could of asked for. I have been playing all of them out in the clubs and the best thing is that they are all quite different from each other so they all work in different ways and at different times.
You champion a lot of these artists on your show on Radio 1. We’re massive fans & gutted your only playing quarterly now. How’s the whole experience been & have you found it’s opened you up to a new audience?
I have to say that it is hands down been one of the coolest things i have been part of. Never in my life did I ever think I would end up on the radio and having had the opportunity to showcase all of this music on Radio 1 is really special. I do think it has helped raise my profile in the UK. I always played more in Europe and elsewhere on the planet and not so much in the U.K. but in the past 2 years that has changed immensely. The idea behind “In new DJ’s we trust” was only to do 6 shows and then rotate the artist. I have been so lucky they kept me on for 2 and a half years and I still do the 5th Thursday of the month. They haven’t gotten rid of me yet, I’m still flying the flag!
There are a lot of female DJ’s at the top of the game right now. Do you get pissed off with people bringing this up? We think the ladies bring something else to the table, are we talking rubbish?
Its great to see more woman getting involved in this business. When people bring it up it’s just an automatic question as there aren’t many woman involved in this scene and they can’t help but ask. It does get boring when you’ve been asked it 100 times but whatever. That’s the way it goes. I answer as honestly as possible. Yes, I do think we bring something different to the table as we are different creatures of habit. We think, look, act and feel different on a daily basis so therefore we will most likely play music in a different way. I find that when i hear a woman play most of the time it feels a bit warmer and not as clinical. I know that i play music that you can feel from the waist down. If you hit them in the pelvic region on the dancefloor chances are they will stay there all night.
We hear you’ve moved back to London from Berlin. What can you tell us about how the scene’s are changing right now?
When i left London 3 years ago the party scene was lacking somewhat. There wasn’t a big variety of good nights going on besides Fabric and The End. Now there’s an abundance of warehouse jam sessions going on. Having some choice is great.
So this Saturday, London hosts ‘A night with Heidi’ – Ever played an 8 hour set before?
I have played many impromptu long sets. Those just happened by accident and most of the time it was in Berlin as those crowds won’t leave until you have dropped dead behind the decks. This is different as I have to plan ahead. Lets just say there will be many forms of music. A lil’ hip hop, some disco, some funk and of course the main part of the night will be house and techno.
Thanks Heidi… were looking forward to Saturday & we’ll finish on the question you always ask your guest’s on the show, If you could choose any Super-Power…
Aha! Its nice to be asked this question as I love asking it to others. I did say on my show when i interviewed Matthew Dear…..i asked him what he would want and he said to play every instrument. I said i would love to speak every language. He then said that together we could pan handle across the globe and make a ton of cash……what girl wouldn’t want to do that with him…….
